Description:
Staff Reporter
The New Pine Plains Herald, an award-winning nonprofit weekly newsroom serving Pine Plains, Ancram, Gallatin, Milan, and Stanford, is seeking a full-time general assignment reporter. Since launching in 2022, the Herald has earned multiple New York Press Association awards and received the Institute for Nonprofit News’ 2025 Community Champion Award for impactful local reporting. The reporter will join the editor in chief, freelance contributors, and a dedicated team of volunteers as the newsroom expands its coverage across the rural Hudson Valley.
Responsibilities:
Produce timely and quality reports on local government meetings, community events, and breaking news in person.
Write enterprise features, profiles, and human-interest stories relevant to our readers as assigned by the editor-in-chief.
File concise and accurate reports on deadline (typically 2–4 stories per week).
Collaborate with the editor-in-chief to identify story ideas that reflect the concerns and experiences of our region.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
Excellent writing and reporting skills, with a portfolio of clips that demonstrate clarity, accuracy, and local focus.
Must live within 30-40 minutes of Pine Plains, N.Y., with reliable transportation (car required).
Ability to meet deadlines and work independently.
Ability to take editorial direction and manage a wide range of assignments across beats
Familiarity with AP style
Excellent photography skills
Compensation:
Salary of $47,500–$55,000, commensurate with experience. A generous time-off package, including paid time off, holidays, and collective rest periods, as well as healthcare and dental benefits.
