Small Town, Alaska

Job Status Full-time

Description:

Small-town newspaper in Alaska needs a reporter who can take photos. Covering City Hall, schools, community events, high school sports, people features -- those are the easy parts. The real work will be learning about the community, getting to know people and what's important to them, listening more than talking and accepting that residents in small towns care more about their community than national and world affairs and politics. The reporter will need to work through people's reluctance to be in the spotlight -- it's not shyness, but rather modesty. The right hire will acclimate to small town life and enjoy its uniqueness. And the right hire should want to learn about the state. Alaska may be geographically large, but its communities share many of the same problems. Job requirements: Reporting accuracy is non-negotiable; inquisitiveness is non-negotiable; spelling names correctly is non-negotiable; walking around town to meet people is non-negotiable. If interested, send me a resume and cover letter and we'll talk.
