Description:
Managing Editor
The NJ State House News Service — a teaching newsroom — is looking for an enthusiastic, energetic editor to manage and mentor a small but productive team of young journalists.
We are a nonprofit media organization dedicated to training the next generation of journalists. We report on state government and politics in a timely and accurate manner, collaborating with colleges and universities to find outstanding candidates for our program. We distribute our content to a statewide network of media partners and platforms.
We are looking for a motivated, self-directed editor who is comfortable running a small newsroom in a very hands-on way. We are looking for a sharp word editor who is enthusiastic about digital content; a deep knowledge of the State House and New Jersey politics; and the ability to connect what happens in Trenton to the daily lives of people. This is a grant-funded position that reports to the editor and directs the work of six to eight part-time student journalists throughout the year.
What we offer
A positive work environment
Hybrid schedule (two days per week in Trenton)
A collaborative mind set
A cooperative and respectful newsroom
Strong Benefits
Health insurance reimbursement
Flexible work hours
Abundant PTO — including four weeks during the summer
A competitive salary
$70,000-$80,000 annually
The ideal candidate would have
Five years of journalism experience, including entry level editing roles.
Impeccable news judgment and a commitment to news coverage that engages audiences.
A commitment to the highest standards of journalistic ethics and integrity; delivering content that is accurate, fair, and nonpartisan.
Enthusiasm for all content formats, including videos and podcasting.
The ability to manage multiple reporters and stories with positivity, humor and empathy.
Experience covering legislative and executive branches of government, with an extensive network of government contacts.
Duties of the position
Work with reporters to produce and edit content.
Assign and track stories as warranted.
Maintain a weekly news budget and handle copy flow.
Identify multimedia content opportunities, including video, audio, photos, and graphics.
