Position available for freelance journalist

The Berkshire Edge, an online platform covering news and culture in Berkshire County, Mass., updated daily, seeks an innovative, self-motivated and versatile journalist to join our team.

We are a scrappy, ambitious, fast-growing, innovative and original, online-only daily local "newspaper." We are small, and the work of every team member makes a huge difference. We take full advantage of all the opportunities that online publishing allows, including links to original sources, embedded video, photos, social media and reader comments. The Berkshire Edge (theberkshireedge.com) has become a well-respected local institution in less than a dozen years. We cover a sophisticated and surprisingly complex community in the southwest corner of Massachusetts known for its rich cultural offerings due to its proximity to New York and Boston, its many independent farms, its high level of civic engagement and its beautiful natural environment. We engage in a continuing dialogue with all segments of our community.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to cover everything from town government and local education, to personalities, the business scene, and cultural and demographic trends in Berkshire County. The Edge's audience is a mix of locals, second homeowners, and visitors. This reporter should be comfortable in an online-only environment and be enthusiastic about telling stories using not only text, but employing relevant links, images, and video.

Much of the work can be completed remotely, though some in-person evening coverage of municipal meetings and weekend events will be required. A reliable vehicle is a must.

Experience is preferred but we are willing to consider a recent college graduate with a major either in journalism or in a subject that requires much reading and writing. This is an opportunity to work for an independently owned local news organization where every employee can make a difference and a significant contribution.
