Ladder to the Moon Network is dedicated to empowering and supporting immigrant communities in Maine. We focus on creating inclusive programs that foster cultural understanding, provide essential resources, and build pathways to success for immigrants and their families.
About Amjambo Africa:
Amjambo Africa is a program of Ladder to the Moon Network that provides news and information to Maine’s immigrant communities and their neighbors in multiple languages (English, French, Kinyarwanda, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Somali). We publish a free monthly print newspaper as well as digital news through podcasts, video, and our website. We help newcomers thrive and bridge cultural gaps by sharing information about life in Maine, as well as updates from the regions from which many of our new arrivals came. Currently, the Amjambo team is a mix of local freelance reporters, overseas African reporters, domestic translators, and two local staff (deputy editor and social media manager).
Position Overview:
The Editor-in-Chief will serve as the creative and logistical manager of Amjambo Africa, responsible for its overall leadership, strategic direction, and management. An ideal applicant will be a strategic and visionary leader with substantial experience in journalism, media, communications, and community engagement, particularly within immigrant communities.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide strategic leadership to advance the mission and vision of Ladder to the Moon Network
Partner with the Executive Director on comprehensive fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor cultivation, and major gift solicitation to secure sustainable funding
Help the Executive Director develop and implement new community programs that proactively address the needs of Maine’s immigrant population
Help to build and maintain strong relationships with community partners, stakeholders, and policymakers
Oversee Amjambo Africa’s operations, including staff management, budgeting, and program evaluation
Foster an organizational culture that values collaboration, diversity, equity, and inclusion
Desired Qualifications:
Proven editorial experience in a nonprofit or community-based media organization
Demonstrated success navigating digital transitions in news, including subscription models, WhatsApp channels, social media, and video content
Strong understanding of project management, including budgeting, reporting, managing staff, ensuring compliance with grant obligations
Substantial experience in developing community relationships, especially with agencies serving immigrant populations
Strong understanding of the social, economic, and political issues affecting immigrant communities in Maine
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and build consensus among stakeholders
Bachelor’s degree required: Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred
