Reporter – Full Time
Los Altos Town Crier – Serving the community since 1947
The Los Altos Town Crier, a privately owned local newspaper with a weekly circulation of 15,500, is seeking an experienced full-time reporter to cover local news.
The ideal candidate is passionate about community journalism, skilled in AP Style, Adobe InDesign, and Photoshop, and committed to reporting with accuracy, fairness, and creativity while telling the stories of our community..
Key Responsibilities
Report and write news stories while developing longer-form enterprise pieces.
Pitch story ideas that inform and engage local residents
Cover school board meetings, city council meetings, public meetings, and community events
File stories on deadline for our weekly newsletter
Develop and maintain productive source relationships
Collaborate with other reporters, editors, and visual journalists
Take photos and videos as needed
Assist occasionally with community events, forums, and outreach activities
Be available for some evening and weekend work, including monitoring breaking news
Requirements
Previous professional reporting experience
Experience in newspaper layout design using Adobe InDesign
Strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills
Proficiency in AP Style
Comfort filing Public Records Act (PRA) requests and pursuing public records
Strong organizational skills and a proactive attitude
Demonstrated passion for local journalism
Excellent news judgment
Strong news writing skills under deadline pressure
Juggle multiple stories of varying complexity on weekly deadline
Regular and reliable attendance
Benefits and Compensation:
The wage range is $41,000 to $45,000 per year. Pay is based on several factors, including, but not limited to, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, and other relevant qualifications.
