Assistant City Editor

Reports to: City Editor

Classification: Full-time, Exempt

Safety Sensitive Position: Pursuant to Act 593 of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette is seeking a dedicated, detailed journalist to be an assistant city editor for the state’s leading news source. We want an editor who knows what it takes to be a successful reporter, who knows how to problem-solve and how to drive excellence in all that we do. You’ll lead a team of reporters and be key to pushing our effort to hold powerful people to account and develop our staff to be among the best in the country.

Our next assistant city editor will be:

  • Experienced in delivering high-impact journalism in a fast-paced environment
  • Driven by the sense of urgency needed in a digital-first environment
  • Competitive, inspired by the challenges posed by a vibrant metro news market
  • Adept in multimedia and able to use all available platforms effectively
  • Able to seamlessly work with digital teams to ensure the best possible reader experience
  • Fluent in AP style
  • Skilled in spotting holes in stories and helping reporters produce unassailable copy
  • Organized and able to manage a team of reporters to ensure maximum productivity
  • Knowledgeable in running a beat and finding the big stories others miss
  • Proficient in grammar and sentence structure and consistently able to deliver clean, tight copy
  • Innovative in getting to stories and presenting them effectively on all platforms

To be considered qualified, candidates will:

  • Have worked at least five years as a journalist
  • Have a proven record of performance in a digital-first environment
  • Have demonstrated an ability to deliver high-level, air-tight content
  • Have work samples demonstrating an ability to produce strong, tightly written copy
  • Have demonstrated knowledge of FOIA law and AP style
  • Be steeped in digital best practices
  • Have a background in leadership and management
