Description:

The Bangor Daily News, an innovative, award-winning and family-owned digital media company, has an immediate opening for an aggressive reporter covering news in coastal Maine.

This is an incredible opportunity to live in one of the country’s most beautiful and fascinating regions while doing impactful journalism.

The position covers two major beats: Ellsworth, a fast-growing city with a high quality of life that is the gateway to Down East Maine, and Mount Desert Island, a major tourist destination that is home to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.

We’re looking for a reporter to cover breaking news and the biggest stories in business, local politics, culture and tourism. In the past year, we’ve reported on the affairs of the billionaires who flock to the region, a police chief in Ellsworth who eventually was fired on suspicion or reporting to work when drunk, the exploding popularity of Acadia and the hidden homelessness on the edge of Maine’s tourist mecca. The position is part of a team of journalists dedicated to serving an audience with direct, honest, comprehensive and compelling local reporting of changing communities along Maine’s coast.

If you’re the right person for this challenge, this is how we would describe you: You want to be the go-to person for trusted news in your area. You can explain the importance of a story, and how it serves the audience. You have excellent critical thinking skills. You know that good journalism depends on good sources, so you pride yourself on growing your network to get information that no one else has. You are a savvy digital news consumer comfortable presenting information in different formats — from straight-up news stories to analyses and explainers.

You’d be joining a large, and growing, statewide news organization in its fourth generation of local ownership. We believe that there’s a bright future for newsrooms that invest in good journalism and put their audiences first. This role is a key part of that strategy.

If you think you might be our next great hire, please submit your resume, cover letter and links to at least three clips to jdyer@bangordailynews.com.
