Freelance Reporter – Habitat Magazine (NYC Metro Area)

Habitat Magazine, the leading publication for co-op and condo board members in the New York metro area, is seeking a freelance Reporter with strong explanatory-writing skills and service-journalism instincts and the ability to turn complex real-estate and building-management topics into clear, practical journalism.

About the Role

You’ll cover a specialized and highly engaged beat: the legal, financial, governance, and operational issues that shape New York’s co-ops and condos. Our readers are volunteer board directors — not real estate professionals — so you must be able to translate technical, financial or legal information into accessible, service-focused reporting. Your stories will help board directors make informed decisions by breaking down complex issues into straightforward, actionable reporting.

Stories typically run 1,000–1,500 words, and this role offers ongoing assignments for the right writer.

Responsibilities

• Report and write well-sourced articles for print and digital
• Interview board directors, attorneys, property managers, engineers, architects, and city officials
• Break down complex regulations, building-science topics, and financial concepts andtranslate into plain-language, reader-centered reporting
• Pitch ideas rooted in trends and real challenges co-op/condo boards face
• Collaborate with editors to refine framing and ensure clarity and accuracy

What You Bring

• 2–5+ years of reporting experience
• Proven ability to distill complex material into practical takeaways
• Strong interviewing and research skills
• Comfort meeting deadlines and handling multiple assignments
• Curiosity about NYC real estate, housing, building operations, and governance

Compensation

$800–$1,200 per article, depending on assignment complexity and length
