Editor-Reporter, The Chief

Come shape the future of New York City’s oldest labor newspaper. The Chief — an independent newsroom covering New York’s public- and private-sector workers, unions, and government — is seeking an early-career journalist who’s ready to take on both editing and reporting responsibilities. This role is well-suited to a reporter or assistant editor who is eager to grow, take ownership of stories, and help guide coverage. We’re looking for someone who combines sharp editorial instincts with a genuine curiosity about the lives of public workers and the systems that shape New York City.

What You’ll Do
• Report and write news and feature stories for print and digital.
• Work with staff and freelance reporters to shape story ideas and strengthen reporting.
• Assign, edit, and write news and features for print and web.
• Help manage production deadlines and web publishing.
• Oversee production schedules and ensure timely publication across platforms, including newsletters and social media. 

 • Shape and execute strategies to grow The Chief’s online readership and engagement.
• Maintain high standards of accuracy, fairness, and clarity.

What We’re Looking For
• About 2–4 years of newsroom reporting experience; some editing experience is a plus.
• Curiosity about labor, local government, and the public sector.
• Strong writing and fact-checking skills.
• Experience with headline writing, story framing, and visual/graphics selection is a plus. 

 • Familiarity with AP style and digital publishing tools.
• A commitment to public-interest journalism and respect for the communities we cover.
