Description:

General Assignment Reporter – The Belmont Voice

The Belmont Voice, an independent, nonprofit news organization dedicated to providing meaningful local coverage to the Town of Belmont, is seeking a full-time general assignment reporter with a strong interest in local government, business, and public safety. This position will be particularly focused on covering Belmont’s schools.

We’re looking for someone who can cover the full range of stories in a small town, whether that’s a select board meeting, a new school initiative, a breaking public safety story, or a profile of local businesses or residents. The ideal candidate understands that reporting encompasses more than simply recasting press releases or meeting recaps. We want someone who can uncover the story at the heart of the issue by developing strong sources throughout the community – not just public officials, but also residents, business owners, teachers, and others whose voices should be heard.

The successful candidate will:

  • Report on local news with accuracy, fairness, and context.

  • Develop and maintain diverse sources throughout the community.

  • Go beyond surface-level coverage to explain why an issue matters.

  • Write clear, compelling copy on deadline.

  • Use digital tools and multimedia skills (basic photography/video) to enhance coverage.

  • Collaborate with colleagues in a supportive, small newsroom environment.

What we’re looking for:

  • Curiosity about people and communities, with the instincts to find the story behind the story.

  • Strong understanding of how local government, schools, and community organizations work.

  • Ability to generate original story ideas as well as cover assigned beats and breaking news.

  • Comfort with public records requests, data, and research to strengthen reporting.

  • Familiarity with AP style and standard journalistic practices.

  • Multimedia skills to contribute to our digital coverage.

Schedule & Location:
This position is based in Belmont, with reporters expected to spend most of their time in the newsroom and around town. Some evening and weekend work is required. A driver’s license and access to a vehicle are strongly preferred.

If you are passionate about community journalism, eager to build strong relationships, and driven to tell stories that matter to Belmont residents, we want to hear from you.

Benefits:  The salary range for this position is $50,000–$55,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Benefits include employer-sponsored health insurance for the employee (coverage for partners or dependents is not included), four weeks of paid vacation (one week to be taken during organizational hiatus periods), paid sick leave, and 12 paid holidays.

To apply. Fill out this form to submit your resume and cover letter, along with three samples of past articles and any multimedia work you want to share.
