Description:
Come shape the future of Judaism--and Jewish journalism--in the heart of Jewish innovation. At a time when American Jewry is at an inflection point, there is no better place from which to tell the story of American Judaism than at J. The Jewish News of Northern California.
J. has been in business for 130 years. We have deep community relationships and a warm pool of affection (and donations) from our 30,000+ readers. Covering everything from Israeli tech to eco-spirituality, J. staff currently are experimenting with AI workflows, podcasts, in-person events and more. This is not an organization that stands still.
J. is in a growth mode, increasing revenue year over year; J. 's business operations are solid and revenue is diversified; just this year J.’s editorial staff won 15 awards, including first place awards in head-to-head competitions with major regional news outlets. J.’s stories have been picked up and referenced by outlets such as The Forward, JTA (Jewish wire services), Berkeleyside and the Washington Post. J. is a member of INN, LION Publishers and AAN.
Your role is to be a strategic leader and visionary, the public face of the organization and the behind-the-scenes leader of an 11 person strong newsroom. You will bring with you substantial management and leadership experience, a background in journalism, and an appetite for looking forward.
You will:
- Develop and execute an editorial vision that places J. within the culture of Northern California innovation;
- Lead a dynamic editorial group across news, opinion, culture, and Jewish life, ensuring excellence on all platforms — web, newsletter, social, podcast, print, and in-person events.
- Commission and shape coverage that reflects the diversity of Jewish experiences, voices, and perspectives, and the innovation happening in Jewish Northern California.
- Encourage the team to experiment with new content formats, storytelling techniques, and distribution channels to reach a range of audiences.
- Partner with teams across the organization to drive engagement; grow readership, members, and supporters; and build community around J.’s journalism.
- Foster a newsroom culture of excellence, collaboration, innovation, inclusion, and professional growth.
- Represent J. in public forums, in the media, and with community partners and stakeholders.
- Serve on the executive team, interface with the Board of Directors, and join the CEO in meeting with key financial supporters.
You have:
- 7+ years of experience in journalism, with at least two years in editorial leadership roles.
- Strong understanding of Jewish life — religious, cultural, political, and generational — with a commitment to reporting with breadth and nuance.
- Editorial judgment, creativity, and comfort working across platforms and formats, with the ability to make the most out of resources available.
- Experience leading and managing with clarity, empathy, and accountability.
- Experience speaking in public.
- Familiarity with analytics, SEO, social media trends, and digital publishing tools.
If you think you have the right skills for the role but not the experience we’ve specified, we encourage you to apply and tell us about yourself.
What J. offers:
- Hybrid work structure: Editorial staff meets daily online and once a week in person in our San Francisco office, right near transit.
- A robust benefits package, including
- health insurance
- life insurance
- 401k
- short- and long-term disability (STD/LTD)
- flexible spending plan
- transit plan
- generous vacation (including Jewish holidays)
- Opportunity to have a direct and positive impact on strengthening independent Jewish journalism at a time when the community needs it most.
