Description:

General Assignment Reporter — Keizertimes

A local newspaper with a big reputation in a vibrant city of 35,000 seeks an early-career journalist eager to grow, learn, and make an impact. The Keizertimes, a weekly community news organization in Oregon, has earned recognition for its commitment to local coverage and watchdog journalism while capturing the stories that define community life.

You’ll work under the direction of Les Zaitz, an experienced editor, two-time Pulitzer finalist, and national SPJ Fellow. You’ll cover local government, education, community issues, and the people who make Keizer what it is. You’ll also have the freedom to pursue your own story ideas. The right candidate could be on a track to become editor.

What you need to qualify:
We aren’t the place to learn how to write a lead, but we are the place to become a stronger, more confident journalist. Bring a solid foundation in basic reporting and writing, curiosity about your community, and a hunger to get better. Fluency in Spanish—spoken and written—is a big plus.

What we offer:
The Keizertimes is a hands-on newsroom where you’ll sharpen your reporting and writing skills every week. You’ll get thoughtful editing and coaching focused on framing and depth, not just copy tweaks. You’ll learn how to use public records effectively, prepare well for interviews, and organize a beat –experience that prepares you for larger newsrooms.

We see ourselves as a training ground for ambitious journalists – a place to build skills that will take you wherever you want to go in the profession. We are committed to high standards of accuracy and fairness. We are devoted only to our readers – not any special interest.

To apply:
Submit three items:

  1. Your resume
  2. A cover letter explaining what you’ve learned about Keizer and the Keizertimes, and why you’d be a good fit
  3. Three recent stories that show your abilities

Generic letters will be dismissed—show us you’ve done your homework.

Email your application to publisher@keizertimes.com.
Deadline: Nov. 7
