JOB SUMMARY

This newly-established position will serve as a deputy to the head of media relations, helping to build and manage a small team responsible for press, strategic communications, and podcast production at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Media relations are a core function for the team, which includes generating earned media coverage around a regular schedule of program announcements, analyzing media coverage of the organization, responding to press inquiries, and assisting with any crisis communications situations that may arise. 

Additionally, the team will be taking on a growing portfolio of strategic communications work for the organization, including speechwriting, op-ed drafting, CEO positioning, message development, and the launch of a new podcast.

This new position will be responsible for both executing work in several of the areas above and coordinating with 1-2 junior employees who specialize respectively in PR and audio content creation.

This role is DC based.

DUTIES

  • Help ensure the success of PR efforts connected to a wide variety of overlapping program announcements, organizational updates, leadership positioning, and the publication of owned content.
  • Assist the head of media relations with project management, developing and executing PR plans, coverage reporting, and overseeing the work of a new public relations assistant.
  • Responsible for common deliverables such as pitch templates, media lists, press releases, and coverage reports. Occasionally responsible for drafting op-eds, speechwriting, and conducting research / producing written deliverables connected to a new podcast.
  • Communicate frequently with reporters in an on-the-record capacity.
  • Initially the team will work in person at the DC office several days per week. After a few weeks/months, our team will return to its normal posture in an almost entirely remote setting. In-person attendance may still be required for certain occasional meetings / events.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience (particularly in a PR agency, Capitol Hill, or journalism setting).
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail. Highly organized. Finely tuned news judgement. 
  • Experience managing others (particularly in a remote or hybrid environment).
  • Familiarity with media monitoring databases like Cision.
  • Personal interest in U.S. history topics.
  • Basic analytical and problem-solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization. Basic project organizational skills. Ability to achieve results with limited supervision. 
  • Experience successfully interacting with key stakeholders. Ability to collaborate and achieve results. When working in the office, public contact and ability to work successfully in close proximity to others required. When working off site, ability to work effectively in a remote environment, maintaining productivity and communication to meet deadlines and goals, is required.
  • Demonstrated success in working with culturally diverse colleagues and stakeholders. Bi-lingual language skills a plus. 
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently and respond to a high volume of ongoing requests in a timely fashion. Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment. Ability to work effectively with frequent interruptions required. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat required.
  • Interest in history and preservation preferred.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • Occasional travel may be required. 

PAY & BENEFITS


This is a full-time, exempt level position, eligible for full benefits, including health, dental and life insurance, retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and 3 + weeks of vacation, plus sick time and holidays.


Hiring Range: $70,000-87,000 per year.
