Freelance Academic Writer/UFAI Initiative


Overview


The University of Florida Office of the Provost seeks a freelance writer to produce an implementation-ready technical report detailing the academic and business processes underpinning the UF AI Initiative.

This assignment will serve as the first in a potential series, with additional opportunities available based on successful completion.
This series is intended to provide practical guidance for leaders and staff at public and private universities to integrate AI into curricula, research programs, and operations.

The ideal candidate will be skilled at translating complex institutional and academic processes into clear, engaging, and actionable language. They should be comfortable working with subject-matter experts to synthesize academic, operational, and policy information into cohesive, materials. Experience writing for higher education, technology, or research audiences and a demonstrated ability to produce polished, publication-quality reports independently is strongly preferred.

All reports will be made freely available online for a global higher education audience.

Responsibilities:

• Research, synthesize and document UFAI processes; interview UF stakeholders; translate practices into clear and actionable guidance for higher education stakeholders.

• Produce step-by-step guides on topics such as:




AI Across Academic Disciplines: How UF colleges and departments integrate AI into undergraduate and graduate degree programs, requirements and student experience.



Financial Sustainability: Procurement, funding and support for UF's central AI computing resources.



AI and Accreditation: The nuts and bolts of integrating AI into UF's accredited academic programs, including creating AI course categories, defining student learning outcomes (SLOs) and reporting for accreditors.



Structure of the AI research ecosystem: Training and consulting staff to support research activities.


Deliverables:

• 2,000-5,000-word standalone reports with supporting visuals as needed, published online sequentially upon approval.

Timeline:

• Initial contract for first report ASAP; extendable for additional reports for up to 12 months.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years in relevant journalism, policy or technical writing; experience with academic administration preferred.
• Strong interviewing skills and proven ability to explain complex topics concisely and clearly.
• Proficiency creating basic instructional visuals (checklists, tables, flowcharts, etc.)
• Portfolio demonstrating similar work.
• Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or other appropriate area of specialization.

Compensation:

• Competitive; per-report; negotiated.

Location:

• Remote, hybrid or in-person.
