Job Summary
Just the News is looking for a police and law enforcement reporter. The ideal candidate will have experience working a “cops beat” and understand the most challenging issues regarding crime in the U.S. and how law enforcement – from a local sheriff’s office to the FBI – responds to it.
Responsibilities
Formulate ideas on original content of local and national importance based on having a broad and deep understanding of all things relative to Law Enforcement, with a passion for “getting it right “.
Uncovering the stories that matter and an understanding of how to engage an audience for the work produced.
Collaborate with other journalists across the newsroom and generate scoops and in-depth reporting in a competitive breaking news environment.
Produce and edit several news stories each day.
Work with the Managing Editor and News Director and with a staff of journalists to create compelling news content
Research stories and set up/ conduct interviews.
Work with other newsroom managers and promotions to strategically place content.
Work with the social media and video teams to maximize the multimedia aspects of each article and maximize audience reach.
Qualifications
Must be a skilled journalist and breaking news writer, with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in political/law enforcement-related news.
Extremely organized, Entrepreneurial thinking, and a collaborative spirit
Proven ability to juggle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
Self-starter who can develop sources and leads while producing clean and authoritatively written copy
Must have a relentless commitment to accuracy, precision, fairness, and balance.
Ability to navigate digital platforms and stay on top of current events
A deep passion for digging and digital storytelling is essential.
Clear understanding of journalism rules and laws as well as journalists’ rights to records and meetings
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge and demonstration of editorial judgment

This is a full-time role represented by Bentley Media Group, LLC, with a salary range to be determined depending on experience, and generous benefits. The office is located in Washington D.C. and applicants must be willing to work out of the office which is located at 1717 Pennsylvania Ave.
