General Assignment Reporter — Edwardsville Intelligencer
The Edwardsville Intelligencer is seeking a motivated and community-focused journalist to join our newsroom in covering one of the most vibrant and fast-growing areas of southwestern Illinois.
This position is a general assignment role, offering opportunities to cover a wide range of stories — from breaking news and local events to in-depth reporting on city issues, business development, and how growth is shaping daily life in Edwardsville and Glen Carbon.
We’re looking for a storyteller who can move comfortably between quick-turn stories and deeper enterprise reporting, someone eager to find out what matters most to local readers and tell those stories clearly, accurately, and creatively.
Responsibilities

Report on a variety of local topics, including city government, business development, community events, and human-interest stories.

Cover breaking news as it happens, providing accurate updates for digital and print audiences.

Attend public meetings and community events to identify stories and connect with residents.

Develop enterprise and feature stories that explore how the region’s rapid growth affects people and neighborhoods.

Take photos and gather multimedia elements to enhance storytelling across platforms.

Work collaboratively with editors and colleagues to deliver engaging, reader-centered coverage.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field — or equivalent professional experience.

Strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills.

Familiarity with AP Style and a digital-first newsroom mindset.

Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.

Photo and video skills are a plus.

Willingness to live in or relocate to the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area.
