Description:
Stars and Stripes is searching for a
talented, aggressive reporter to help provide quality First Amendment-protected
news and information to the U.S. military community overseas. This is a unique
opportunity to live and work in South Korea, one of the world’s most exciting
and dynamic countries.
This position, based south of Seoul at
Camp Humphreys, serves as our primary correspondent on the Korean Peninsula and
reports to editors in Tokyo. You’ll work alongside a Korean
translator/editorial specialist and a junior reporter assigned to us by the
U.S. Army.
We’re looking for someone who can spot
broader U.S. military issues and develop them into stories that resonate
throughout the global community of U.S. troops, civilians, veterans and their
families.
The ideal candidate is a hard worker
able to tackle everything from sudden North Korean missile launches to in depth
analysis pieces on military cost-sharing negotiations between Seoul and
Washington.
Experience with and knowledge of the
U.S. military is a major plus. Sharp news instincts, interviewing skills and
the ability to develop top-notch sources and write on tight deadlines are a
must. Basic photography, video-shooting and social media skills are also
required.
Qualified candidates will receive
excellent federal benefits, including paid housing/utilities and a regular post
allowance (non-taxable money granted to federal workers stationed in a foreign
area to help offset a high cost of living). You’ll also be able to shop
tax-free at U.S. military bases and send your children to on-base Defense
Department schools tuition-free.
