Description:

The Villages Daily Sun, Florida's largest daily printed newspaper — a 2024 Pulitzer Prize finalist with an APSE-honored sports section — is seeking a seasoned newsroom strategist who shares our passion for community journalism and unlocking the potential in our staff.

About this position

This is deputy-level role charged with oversight of the two managing editors who oversee the dayside sports reporting team and after-hours page production operation, so a cross-functional skillset in both newsgathering and visual editing is essential. We’re looking for a player-coach with at least five years of newsroom experience who is adept at setting an ambitious agenda, shepherding the work from conception to execution and making people feel good about a job well done.

You will directly hold the career development of a dozen people in your hands while coordinating across all newsroom teams to help chart the newsroom direction as a whole.

This is a print-centric role solely focused on journalistic excellence with no digital distractions (our newsroom does contribute to our TV and radio platforms). It requires advanced skills in interpreting and accurately presenting a wide range of information across subject matter, and deep knowledge of the world of sports is a must.

Ours is an onsite newsroom that believes in the power of eyeball-to-eyeball collaboration vs. the creative vacuum of a remote workflow. We print on our own state-of-the-art press, which means our 12-page daily sports section rarely misses the final score. We'll be counting on you to make sound editing decisions, deploy resources strategically and direct superior work under deadline pressure. Bonus points if you've already worked in a role coordinating with a nightside press team.

The role is typically Monday-Friday dayside work, but requires flexibility to work occasional nights and weekends when major sporting events will benefit from your high-level support.
