Description:

The Villages Daily Sun, Florida's largest daily printed newspaper — a 2024 Pulitzer Prize finalist with an APSE-honored sports section — is seeking an editor to drive our coverage plan for a devoted, diverse sports fanbase.

About this position

This role is perfect for a player-coach who speaks the language of sports junkies and knows how to unlock the potential in a squad of hungry beat writers. You will be directly responsible for four writers with a strong dotted line to two columnists, and your best friend will be the managing editor for night production who oversees the sports design team.

This is a print-centric role solely focused on journalistic excellence with no digital distractions (our newsroom does contribute to our TV and radio platforms). Our readership is comprised of more than 160,000 people who have all retired here from somewhere else, bringing their hometown sports allegiance with them. So deep knowledge of the entire sports landscape is a must, along with an understanding of how to balance that wire coverage against local event and enterprise coverage.

Ours is an onsite newsroom that believes in the power of eyeball-to-eyeball collaboration vs. the creative vacuum of a remote workflow. We print on our own state-of-the-art press, which means our 12-page daily sports section rarely misses the final score.

We value potential as much as pedigree, so previous management experience is not required for the right sports journalist who has a some education and a history of being self-directed.

The role is typically Monday-Friday dayside work, but requires flexibility to work nights and weekends as prep sports and other events dictate.

About The Villages

In addition to the slate of professional franchises across Florida, the lifestyle in the largest retirement community on the planet, is a sports fan’s paradise:

·      The smorgasbord for competitive and recreational athletes includes 247 pickleball courts, more than 100 swimming pools, two bowling centers and four softball complexes that host nearly 5,000 games each year.

·      We're home to the most holes of golf of any community in the world — closing in on 800, including 14 championship courses.

·      Our local athletes dominate at the state, national and international level with events at more than 100 recreation centers, dragonboating lakes and more than 100 miles of paved cycling and running trails.

·      Our writers also cover sports across the region and prep sports at a new high school campus that boasts a massive basketball complex, Olympic-size swimming pool and 6,000-seat football stadium.

·      As a community of 160,000 residents who have all relocated from somewhere else, we have fans from every state backing every professional sports team. So our wire report is robust and well read.
