Description:

A collaboration of public radio stations around North Carolina is hiring a reporter to cover state government and politics. The emphasis will be on stories that resonate with audiences outside of Raleigh. The project is known as the North Carolina Newsroom.

Initial funding covers the first year of this position. This position is based in Raleigh with opportunities for some remote work. The reporter will be a WUNC employee.

Reporting will include quick turnaround spot news, interviews, reporter debriefings, anchor wraps, online reports and well-researched feature reports.

The reporter will work collaboratively with the NC Newsroom editor/reporter, WUNC’s Capitol Bureau Chief, and news staff at partner stations. The position reports to WUNC’s Supervising Editor for Politics.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The reporter will be an experienced journalist with strong communication skills. A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field is required, with a master’s degree preferred. Candidates must have at least three years of experience as a journalist and/or radio producer, preferably in a public radio newsroom.

As news events do not conform to a regular 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule, there are times when the reporter is called on for work during weekends and after hours. The reporter also will be expected to participate in fundraisers and station events.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Creativity and initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and meet deadlines, working with materials from a variety of sources and collaborators.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues effectively and collaboratively.
  • A familiarity with politics and North Carolina.
  • Experience with public radio or related not-for-profit fundraising.
