Texas Monthly, one of the nation’s premier media companies, is looking to hire a full-time fact-checker to ensure the accuracy and fairness of its published material. This position will join a collegial, collaborative team of two staff fact checkers and a research chief who work with editors and writers to do the increasingly important work of confirming reporting, evaluating the quality and veracity of sources in a story, and ensuring that both the granular details and the overarching logic of a story are factually sound. While staff fact-checkers’ primary duty is fact-checking the articles that appear in the print magazine, they will also occasionally check additional journalism for Texas Monthly’s other publishing platforms, such as web-only features, videos, or podcasts. A highly experienced candidate may be hired at the senior fact-checker level if they have at least ten years of journalism experience and a demonstrated ability to expertly handle complex and sensitive stories.

This full-time staff position is based in Austin, Texas, and reports to the research chief. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Checking articles for potential errors or unsound passages by double-checking source materials and calling sources to confirm all factual details
  • Working closely with writers and editors to address any inaccuracies
  • Upholding the values and standards of the Texas Monthly brand

Successful candidates will possess the following skills/abilities:

  • Strong editorial judgment around issues of fairness, accuracy, and logical consistency
  • A fastidiousness regarding details, deadlines, and organization
  • The ability to communicate clearly and diplomatically with parties of all sorts
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines and prioritize assignments
  • Collaborative professional attitude
  • Reporting and interviewing skills, as well as general journalistic know-how
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, as is a general affinity for, or knowledge of, the state of Texas

Education/Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  • Previous fact-checking experience for a magazine or magazine-style outlet
