Boise State Public Radio is Idaho’s largest nonprofit, listener-supported NPR member station, reaching the region's metropolitan and rural areas. Our radio network serves two-thirds of the population of Idaho through 28 transmitters & translators, as well as on digital platforms.

As the only sources of quality public radio news, classical music, jazz and unique cultural programming, our radio stations are distinct in their mission, their audience and their partnerships.

Day to day:

Check broadcast network systems at studios and transmitter sites for optimal functionality, remediate and report as needed, based on severity.

Assist in continued and ongoing enhancement and modernization projects for STL, IP network upgrades, transmission facility enhancements, physical asset management both at studios and offsite storage facilities, keeping engineering trucks clean and tidy/ready for immediate deployment.

Maintaining the ongoing relationship with Programming and News departments to help meet their operational goals on a daily basis.

Provide daily reports of critical projects and systems status, unless urgent and further action from the Chief is needed in real-time.

Weekly:

Act as EAS systems and logging coordinator, delegated duties from the D.C.O.(Chief Engineer), which can include troubleshooting internal and external monitored sources, coordinating with statewide stakeholders when issues arise, checking and potentially fixing any failed EAS routes in Telos Path Finder AOIP routing system, and reporting anomalies to the D.C.O./Chief Engineer.

Travel to local or regional transmitter sites, as needs arise, to make repairs, improvements, or to coordinate work with vendors, consultants, or other site users as various projects ensue.

Help to maintain and enhance the Technical Operations Center(Data center), including HVAC status monitoring, cleanliness, orderly rack mounting, maintain cable infrastructure and documentation(both physically and virtually in Lucidchart SaaS)

Teaching “junior” engineers broadcasting techniques and best practices, as it may apply to their career goals.

Guide the work of Student technician(s) in their new and ongoing projects; being mindful of their student status and class load.

Provide weekly reports of all ongoing projects and systems status.

Provide support for BSPR business-related computers, workstations, and networks, as needed.(General office technology support)

 Monthly/Quarterly:

Provide system status report summaries on a broader level/trends.

Work with supervised staff (both professional and student) to give feedback reports and / or course correction notes, as needed.

Work directly with the Chief Engineer to meet career training goals for self and others in the department. Attend and interact in department meetings.

Attend and interact in bi-weekly “All Staff” meetings.

Help support station events at studios and out in the field.

Helps support Fundraisers by board operating and setting up studios for hosts to pitch from.

Investigate new and transformative technologies, specifically with an “efficiency” mindset.

Assist, as needed with tower projects at BSPR transmissions sites.

This position takes on the responsibility and on-call duties for the studios and transmission facilities, in the absence of and under the direction of the Chief Engineer.


Skills/Knowledge

5 years professional experience

Knowledge of FCC, FAA, BLM, IDL, USFS, PSC, and other applicable regulations.

General electronic maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair ability to the component level.

Specific knowledge of full-spectrum radio transmission, propagation, and reception.

Computer workstation and network support skills.

Ability to develop and work within a department budget.

Interpersonal skills suitable for interactions with other managers, staff, clients, and listeners. 

Solid organizational, communication, and written documentation abilities.


Specific Equipment or Skills

Requires operation of the following electronic test equipment: analog multimeter, digital multimeter, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, and RF Network analyzers, and Ethernet and IP analyzers.

Requires ability to work with / around high voltage and high RF fields, knowledge of  FM transmitters and microwave equipment.

Experience with tower work and rigging equipment (ropes, block and tackle, pulleys, etc.) to effect work on towers, and willingness to work on towers. 

Requires the ability and a willingness to ride ATV’s and ski lifts.

Requires experience with / use of the following computer software: Microsoft Windows, Google Workspace Suite, email, and internet browsers. 

Requires familiarity with Telos LiveWire and other forms of AOIP,  IP networking, including Cisco, Mikrotik, and other devices used in unicast and multicast private and public networks, including the security and maintenance to ensure the availability of these systems
