Description:

The San Antonio Express-News is looking for an experienced photojournalist with a high proficiency in video as well as still photography across a wide variety subject matter. The Express-News is known for their documentary focus and we are looking to expand our vision and seek new, creative methods of connecting with viewers online through video and highlighting our amazing community and region. This will be a highly creative and experimental position with no limits on what we can create.
The Express-News covers much of South-Central Texas from SpaceX on the coast, wineries in the Hill Country in the North, even out to the far West and Big Bend National Park. We are home to the San Antonio Spurs as well as many minor league teams and it all resides in one of the fastest-growing, most interesting regions in the country. Visual opportunities are plentiful and we are often at the center of National stories from immigration and climate to trade and the space race.
San Antonio itself is a modern, culturally diverse city that still has that home town feel with a European charm with a wide array of activities both indoor and out. The Express-News also partners with sister papers, the Austin American-Statesman and the Houston Chronicle. Our partnership with the team of great photojournalists in Austin is being augmented with a new deputy director in both locations along with a regional director of visuals and our emphasis is quality photojournalism.
The Express-News photo staff was a 2014 Pulitzer finalist for their work on immigration and our staff has continued to win national-level awards year after year. The photo editing team came in fourth in NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism 2024. We maintains a very high standard of work across all subject matter.
The staff uses Canon mirrorless equipment as well as video-only setups. We issue Mac Pro laptops along with Photoshop, Photomechanic, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Bridge and more. Proficiency with those programs is a must along with a reliable car or truck and the ability to work and transmit while in the field. We are seeking a true journalist who is capable of hunting down compelling stories while working with a team of talented photographers, writers and editors.
The ideal candidate will have somewhere between 3 and 10 years working for a daily newspaper and their work will emphasize both a still and video journalism. The ability to connect to a broad swath of the community is a must as well as documenting emotionally difficult stories as they arise. We are no stranger to challenging stories, from the mass shooting in Uvalde to the recent floods in Kerr County which killed over 100 people. While those events are few and far between, we do focus on news which has the community’s interest.
Pay will be based on skillset and experience.
If you are interested in the position, please send a short cover letter, resume and a link to an online portfolio. I will also accept mail-in portfolios if an online version is not available.
