Description:
Yellow Sheet Report Editor — Phoenix, AZ
Do you wake up thinking about scoops?
Do you relish the smell of insider memos, the thrill of leakage, the tension in legislative corridors? Then come run the show — we’re hiring an Editor for the Yellow Sheet Report in Phoenix, Arizona.
About Us
Yellow Sheet Report is the legendary political newsletter for Arizona’s Capitol insiders — part news, part gossip, all power. Owned by State Affairs and part of the Arizona Capitol Times family, it’s where the state’s most connected read between the lines.
The Job
As Editor, you’ll:
-
Lead daily operations — curate, edit, assign and publish the most potent political intelligence in Arizona
-
Hunt for scoops, dig into insider chatter and keep your finger on the pulse of the Capitol
-
Write and edit with speed and precision — this is a lightning-fast, high-stakes newsletter
-
Cultivate sources across the Legislature, executive branch, agencies, lobby shops and power circles
-
Shape the voice and direction of a must-read newsletter
What We Want
-
3–5+ years news/editing experience (politics, government, Capitol coverage a strong plus)
-
A bold, confident voice — you’re not rehashing press releases
-
Rapid turnaround under pressure, with zero tolerance for sloppy copy
-
Deep curiosity, thick skin and hustle
-
Bonus: strong network in Arizona political circles, investigative or data skills, willingness and ability to mentor
Logistics
-
Location: Phoenix, AZ (this role is not remote)
-
Salary: $70,000 – $85,000 (depending on experience)
Why This Is Different
You won’t be another cog in a newsroom. You’ll own the voice, own the beat and own the impact. This is a chance to work inside Arizona’s political ecosystem — and help define how insiders and the curious see it.
How to Apply
Send your resume, a creative cover letter, and three sample pieces to Alison Bethel McKenzie, editor-in-chief, at alison@stateaffairs.com. (Yes, we read your cover letters. And, yes, you must have one.)
