Description:
State Affairs California Reporter – Join Us at the Capitol
State Affairs Inc., a fast-growing digital news startup covering state legislatures nationwide, is looking for sharp, experienced journalists to dive deep into the policy and politics shaping California. This is not your average statehouse gig — you’ll be in the middle of the action at the State Capitol in Sacramento, breaking news, unpacking policy and holding power to account.
About Us
State Affairs Pro is our premium platform for political insiders, offering exclusive coverage and analysis of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, plus the state agencies where real change often happens. Think of it as a front-row seat to California government — and you’re the one holding the notebook.
The Role
We’re looking for reporters who thrive on deadlines and can step back for bigger-picture enterprise work. On session days, expect to turn two to three strong, clean stories — from committee hearings to the governor’s latest move — while chasing enterprise stories that explain not just what happened, but why it matters.
This isn’t a remote job and it’s not for beginners. You’ll be based in Sacramento, working most days out of the State Capitol. If you’re not already here, you should be ready to relocate.
What We’re Looking For
-
Three to five years of reporting experience (state government coverage a plus).
-
A relentless curiosity and ability to work sources.
-
Fast, clean writing under pressure.
-
Strong understanding of the political process.
-
Bonus points for investigative chops or data skills.
What We Offer
-
Salary: $80,000–$95,000, based on experience.
-
Health benefits and a generous vacation policy.
-
A chance to help build something new — with real impact and visibility.
Why Now?
We’re a startup with ambition. This is an opportunity to shape coverage in one of the country’s most influential statehouses, do meaningful work, and grow with us. If you’re ready for a newsroom where your reporting makes a difference — this is it.
How to Apply
Send a cover letter, resume and at least three writing samples to Alison Bethel, editor-in-chief and chief content officer, at alison@stateaffairs.com . Applications without a cover letter will not be considered.
State Affairs is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds who share our commitment to fearless, ethical journalism.
