Description:
Evanston Now seeks a versatile general assignment reporter to cover our diverse, news-rich community of 78,000 residents just north of Chicago that’s home to Northwestern University.
You will cover breaking news, features and meetings to serve the information needs of our online audience, typically producing two stories per day.
You’ll have some opportunities to work on longer-term investigative and solutions journalism reporters and to edit the work of others.
You will generate your own story ideas and field assignments from the editor.
Your schedule will include evening meetings and may include some weekend work.
This is a hybrid, mostly remote position, but you will need to be on site to complete some assignments. Evanston is relatively accessible by public transportation, but having your own wheels is highly desirable.
Evanston Now is a growing, locally-owned publication that has been covering the community online since 2006 and is supported by a substantial base of paid subscribers.
You must live in the Chicago area, ideally in Evanston. We do not pay relocation expenses.
Preferred qualifications
A journalism degree or equivalent
One to three years of full-time reporting experience.
Strong writing skills and a command of grammar and AP style.
The ability to produce high quality work quickly.
A commitment to fairness, diversity, inclusion and professionalism.
Skill in shooting photos and video to accompany your stories.
Desirable extras
Spanish fluency.
Social media, multimedia and podcast production skills.
Familiarity with Newspack or other versions of the WordPress CMS.

A salary range of $44,000 to $57,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
