Description:
The Daily Gazette Family of Newspapers in the Capital Region of New York state is looking for an aggressive, take-charge news reporter to help us cover local governments and communities.
This position will provide coverage for our flagship newspaper, The Daily Gazette, and also our sister publications around the region. It’s based out of our main office in Schenectady, N.Y.
We’re seeking a motivated and energetic individual who can think creatively. We want a reporter who knows how to dig for a story and then dig a little deeper to reveal the whole truth. We also want a reporter who’s a skilled storyteller capable of spinning a yarn when the story calls for it.
The best candidates must be able to:
Produce original and accurate daily news coverage for our website and print edition.
Develop and maintain contacts and sources in the community.
Maintain an active social media presence to build our brand, stay on top of issues in the community and communicate with readers/sources/officials.
Think visually — Assign photographs/video to support daily reporting and, when necessary, shoot photographs and video when out reporting.
Identify and pitch bigger perspective stories and packages for Sunday spreads.
Candidates should also have the following:
A proven knowledge and experience working with current media-creation tools and contemporary newsroom systems
Fluency with New York state’s Freedom of Information Law.
2+ years of experience as a daily reporter is preferred
A comfort level with working under deadline pressure to meet strict deadlines
A familiarity with the workings of government at all levels in New York state, from the village level on up to state government.
Research experience, especially with document-based stories.
