Description:

Join The Overlook: Help Us Produce Impactful Community Journalism for the Catskills

The Overlook is hiring sharp, curious news journalists to cover local meetings, community events, and underreported stories across the Catskills. This is a paid, flexible opportunity ideal for freelancers, early-career reporters, and seasoned journalists who believe in the power of local news.

Do you love showing up to town halls? Are you drawn to the stories no one else is telling? Do you get excited about FOIL requests, deep-dive features, and holding the powerful to account? You might be a great fit. We are looking for reporters to focus primarily on Saugerties, but also the other towns we cover: Hunter, Hurley, Olive, Shandaken, and Woodstock. We're also looking for sports writers, arts writers, and journalists interested in writing feature profiles.

To apply:
Send your résumé, a brief cover letter telling us why you care about local journalism, and three clips or writing samples to careers@theoverlooknews.com.

Priority will be given to candidates with access to a vehicle based in Ulster and Greene counties.

Responsibilities

  • Report and write at least two original news stories per week.

  • Conduct thorough research to ensure accuracy, depth and nuance in all reporting.

  • Write clear, concise, and compelling articles in accordance with The Overlook’s editorial standards.

  • Fact-check all content.

  • Attend town government meetings, public events, press conferences and interviews to gather firsthand information.

  • Collaborate with editors and fellow reporters to shape story ideas and develop local coverage plans.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in journalism or a related field preferred.

  • Strong research skills and the ability to translate complex topics into accessible, engaging narratives.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and copy-editing skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy and journalistic integrity.

The Overlook serves the people of the Catskills by producing independent, community-driven journalism that informs, connects, and empowers residents, fosters civic engagement, and deepens understanding of the region’s unique history, culture, and challenges. Through rigorous reporting and thoughtful well-researched storytelling, we seek to amplify local voices, illuminate pressing issues, and strengthen the fabric of Hunter, Hurley, Olive, Saugerties, Shandaken, and Woodstock. The Overlook is fiscally sponsored by the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN). Join us in delivering impactful news stories that matter!
