General Assignment Freelance Reporter

The New Pine Plains Herald, an award-winning nonprofit weekly newsroom serving the rural Hudson Valley communities of Pine Plains, Ancram, Gallatin, Milan, and Stanford, is seeking a general assignment freelance reporter. Since launching in 2022, the Herald has earned multiple New York Press Association awards for excellence in community journalism and recently won the national Institute for Nonprofit News’ Community Champion Award for reporting that created lasting local impact.

We are expanding our coverage and looking to add freelance reporters to join our team of volunteer contributors and our editor in chief, the Herald’s sole full-time staff member. This freelance role offers the opportunity to grow with the newsroom — with the potential for a full-time reporting position in 2026.

Responsibilities:

• Report on local government meetings, community events, and breaking news in person.
• Pitch and write enterprise features, profiles, and human-interest stories relevant to our readers.
• File concise and accurate reports on deadline (typically 1–3 stories per week).
• Collaborate with Editor-in-Chief to identify story ideas that reflect the concerns and experiences of our region.

Compensation:

• Competitive rates per article and gas reimbursement. $100-$300 per article depending on assignment.

Requirements:

• Strong writing and reporting skills, with clips that demonstrate clarity, accuracy, and local focus.
• Must live within 30–45 minutes of Pine Plains, N.Y., with reliable transportation (car required).
• Ability to meet deadlines and work independently.
• Familiarity with AP style preferred.
• Familiarity with photography a plus.
