Summary:


The Virginian-Pilot is seeking an Education Reporter to cover a region with diverse public k-12 school districts and world-class colleges and universities. This high-impact role focuses on watchdog journalism and compelling storytelling, requiring creativity, resourcefulness and impeccable news judgment.


What you will do:

  • Deliver investigative, explanatory and feature stories on education topics

  • Produce diverse content including photos, videos, tweets, web updates, and in-depth print articles

  • Cultivate sources at all levels in public k-12 divisions and higher ed institutions

  • Drill down on national and state education issues to reveal local impact

  • Collaborate with reporters, photographers and editors

  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to breaking news


What you will bring:

  • A collaborative, team-oriented approach

  • A passion for in-depth reporting and storytelling

  • Proficiency in various content creation formats

  • Ability to work weekends and occasional breaking news shifts

  • A college degree and at least two years of daily journalism experience (preferred)

  • Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
