Stars and Stripes, the editorially independent daily news organization covering the U.S. military worldwide, is anticipating an opening for a Bureau Chief to lead its U.S.-based reporting team from Washington, D.C.
This is a key editorial leadership role with global impact. The Bureau Chief oversees coverage of the Pentagon, Capitol Hill and veterans affairs, while managing regional reporters based in Texas, Georgia and Washington state. The successful candidate will guide coverage that informs and engages service members, veterans, families and defense professionals—ensuring our journalism is timely, accurate and deeply relevant.
We’re looking for a leader who:
- Builds trust and collaboration across worldwide bureaus and time zones
- Elevates reporting through mentorship, clear communication and editorial rigor
- Champions multiplatform storytelling, including print, web, social media and video
- Thrives in a fast-paced environment and balances breaking news with enterprise
This role is about more than managing copy. It’s about shaping coverage and ensuring our journalism reflects the news interests of the military community we serve.
Qualifications:
- Proven newsroom leadership experience
- Strong editorial judgment and line-editing skills
- Ability to manage and motivate a geographically dispersed team
- Familiarity with military affairs, defense policy or veterans issues preferred
- Comfort with digital tools, social media strategy and multimedia workflows
