Description:

Stars and Stripes, the editorially independent daily newspaper and website covering the U.S. military worldwide, is seeking a Pentagon beat reporter based in Washington, D.C.

This is a high-impact role for a journalist who thrives on breaking news, cultivating sources and developing enterprise stories that resonate with service members, veterans, families and policymakers. You’ll cover the Defense Department from the inside out — tracking policy shifts, deployments and the experiences of those in uniform.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Lives for scoops and has the persistence to chase them
  • Builds and maintains a robust network of sources across the Pentagon and the broader defense community
  • Can pivot between fast-turn daily news and deep-dive stories
  • Understands how to amplify reporting through social media and short-form video — whether appearing on camera or contributing behind the scenes
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues based around the world

This beat demands more than attending increasingly rare press briefings. It requires initiative, curiosity and the ability to earn trust in a complex, often opaque environment.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in daily journalism
  • Strong reporting, writing and interviewing skills under deadline pressure
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital storytelling tools
  • Knowledge of the military or defense policy preferred
