Love Local News? Come Report With Us in Southeast Missouri
Are you a curious, flexible journalist who loves telling real stories that matter? The Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, is looking for a reporter to join our team and help cover the people, issues, and everyday wins that make this region tick.
We’re not chasing clickbait—we’re covering school board decisions, local businesses, high school sports, big ideas, and small-town heroes. If you care about community-driven journalism and want your work to have real impact, this could be a great fit.
Pay: $36,000 base pay
Location: Poplar Bluff, MO (Southeast Missouri)
What You’ll Be Doing:
Cover a variety of local and regional beats like schools, courts, city government, business, and community events.
Write clear, engaging stories people actually want to read.
Pitch ideas, follow leads, and build connections in the community.
Snap some photos or video to go with your stories.
Help us keep the print edition sharp (we use InDesign—don’t worry, we can train you).
Share your work on our website and social platforms.
Who We’re Looking For:
You’ve got solid writing chops and a nose for news.
You’re organized, curious, and comfortable juggling a few things at once.
Journalism experience is great—but if you’re a recent grad with potential, we want to hear from you.
You know how to work a deadline and you’re not afraid to pick up the phone.
You understand why local news matters—and you’re excited to be part of it.
About Us:
We’re a small but experienced newsroom (five news staff, one sports, plus freelancers) that is digital-first, with a three-day print schedule. Our editor has 20+ years of experience and believes in mentoring reporters. We’ve won several Missouri Press Association awards and take pride in what we do—without burning people out.
This is a great place to learn, grow, and do work that really means something to the people who read it.
Interested? Send your resume and some clips to applications@darnews.com. We’d love to hear from you.
