Role Description
The Wayland Post is seeking a detail-oriented and mission-driven Community Newspaper Editor for a part-time remote role. You will be responsible for managing editorial content from assignment to publication, editing stories for accuracy and clarity, and ensuring the paper maintains its high standards of fact-based journalism. This role also includes coordinating with reporters, freelance writers, and community contributors, as well as helping shape editorial strategy to expand readership and community impact.

Key Responsibilities

Edit, fact-check, and proofread articles to ensure accuracy, fairness, and adherence to AP Style.

Assign stories and work closely with reporters, freelancers, and contributors.

Maintain and manage the editorial calendar to meet publication deadlines.

Uphold editorial standards and ensure balanced, fact-based coverage of local issues.

Collaborate with designers and production staff to ensure timely layout and distribution.

Contribute to developing long-term editorial strategies, including coverage priorities.

Engage with the community to identify story opportunities and foster trust in local journalism.
Qualifications

Strong editing and writing skills with demonstrated knowledge of AP Style.

Proven ability to manage multiple stories and deadlines simultaneously.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Experience managing reporters or freelancers preferred.

A self-starter with a commitment to fact-based, ethical journalism.

Prior experience in community or local journalism is highly valued.

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field is a plus.
