StreetsblogNYC is the city’s number one source for news on urbanism, livability, infrastructure, and related politics. Our tenacious reporters break stories on major City Hall news and investigate ongoing and complex stories that impact New Yorkers’ ability to use our streets safely, equitably, and fairly. Our writing turns arcane topics like parking requirements and induced demand into accessible stories for policymakers and a broad audience. It also centers the importance of transit in creating true equality of mobility.
The ideal candidate is already a resident of Albany and has the following experience and skills:
A demonstrated track record as a working reporter with at least three years of experience producing effective stories. Transit or livable streets coverage is a plus.
An approach to journalism that is not merely reactive, but aware of where a story or trend is going long before it gets there.
The ability to interview elected officials and others with thoughtful and probing questions that demonstrate your knowledge of issues.
Integrity with your work - stories are written with care, precision and are fact-based and error-free.
Eager to develop and maintain strong connections with sources, elected officials, civic organizations and the rest of the Streetsblog community and team.
A high level of organization and ability to juggle multiple assignments and interviews and to track priority legislation.
A knowledge of what Streetsblog does, how it does it, and why it does it the way it does it.
A strong knowledge of issues relevant to sustainable transportation.
An even stronger understanding of how Albany politics play a role in thwarting or supporting livable streets efforts in New York City and upstate cities.
Lots of ideas!
Also: We live in a rapidly changing journalistic environment. The ideal candidate is aware that data visualization is a key part of website publishing and can use online tools to create data graphics or to pluck stories out of otherwise unreadable Open Data sets.

All salary offers are based on a combination of factors including experience and competencies, not on a candidate’s salary negotiation skills. Please review and consider our salary range before applying.
We believe that issues of public space, environmental impacts, and street safety disproportionately affect the most marginalized people in society, including people of color, people from working class backgrounds, women, and LGBTQ people. Because we believe that these communities must be centered in the work we do, we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or who are members of other marginalized communities.
More About Us
Streetsblog NYC covers the five boroughs of New York City and important transportation policy developments in Albany. Starting with our first scoop in 2006, which tallied up the rampant abuse of parking placards, we’ve helped set the agenda for local transportation coverage. We’re read by an influential audience of public officials and ordinary New Yorkers passionate about improving the streets in their neighborhoods.
In 2025, Streetsblog launched its Albany coverage from the state Capitol, covering the legislative process on issues related to transit, transportation, street/highway infrastructure, and state budgets.
In an exciting new opportunity, Streetsblog is seeking an experienced, connected, energetic full-time reporter to broaden our Albany coverage of the legislative session and expand to cover efforts by upstate cities, such as Buffalo and Syracuse, to create safer streets and more livable communities through road design, enforcement and technology.
