Description:

The Coeur d'Alene Press, a flagship publication of the Hagadone Media Group & News Network, is seeking an energetic and collaborative Assistant Managing Editor. This position will work closely with the Managing Editor to ensure exceptional content quality, provide mentorship to newsroom staff, and contribute to shaping the editorial direction of both print and digital platforms.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for local journalism, the ability to inspire and develop reporters, and a keen eye for engaging, accurate, and timely storytelling that resonates with the North Idaho community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Content Development & Oversight

· Partner with the Managing Editor to plan and execute daily, weekly, and long-range content strategies for print and digital platforms.

· Oversee the development of enterprise, investigative, and feature stories that reflect the diverse voices and interests of our community.

· Ensure stories are well-researched, factually accurate, and produced to the highest journalistic standards.

· Collaborate with reporters to refine story angles, strengthen leads, and enhance overall presentation.

Mentorship & Staff Development

· Actively mentor reporters, offering guidance on reporting techniques, interviewing, fact-checking, and narrative structure.

· Hold regular coaching sessions to enhance writing, multimedia skills, and editorial judgment.

· Provide constructive feedback during the editing process, fostering growth and confidence among newsroom staff.

Editorial Process Management

· Serve as a key editorial decision-maker in the absence of the Managing Editor.

· Coordinate with section editors and photographers to ensure cohesive, visually compelling packages.

· Assist in managing daily story budgets and deadlines, balancing breaking news coverage with planned content.

Digital Engagement

· Collaborate with digital staff to expand online reach through multimedia, social media, and innovative storytelling formats.

· Encourage reporters to develop content optimized for both print and digital audiences, including interactive and visual components.

Community Connection

· Support coverage that emphasizes stories important to Coeur d’Alene, Kootenai County, and the surrounding region.

· Engage with readers, community leaders, and stakeholders to maintain trust and ensure coverage reflects community priorities.

Requirements

· Proven newsroom experience, with demonstrated skill in writing, editing, and content development.

· Strong mentoring and leadership abilities with a focus on developing talent.

· Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.

· Solid understanding of both print and digital journalism best practices.

· Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines without sacrificing quality.
