Managing Editor
The Butler Eagle is actively searching for a managing editor
to oversee day-to-day planning and publication of stories and content
for our six-day a week daily Butler Eagle plus our weekly Cranberry
Eagle and monthly Butler County Business Matters.
This unique position requires the candidate to possess an
entrepreneurial spirit to help us grow a dynamic community news ecosystem
focused on delivering original reporting and coverage.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing
the vision for our brands, developing new growth opportunities and
building audience through essential, unique content
- Overseeing
the planning all content according to the publication’s style, editorial
policy and publishing requirements
- Manage
the editorial calendar and develop themed content plans with features and
innovations to serve readers and build audience
- Keep
on top of industry innovations and trends and represent the Butler
Eagle’s interests in related organizations
- Prepare,
rewrite and edit copy to improve readability
- Oversee
staff development, efficiency and hiring
- Monitor
news gathering operations to ensure utilization of all news sources, to
include press releases, community contacts, and other news sources such as
radio, television and wire services with a strong focus on original news
gathering
- Ensure
compliance with copyright permissions both articles and photos
- Supervise
interns, when needed
- Help
conceptualize and coordinate special projects such as editorial packages,
interactive features, student journalism programs, etc.
- Work
with producer on podcast and video production
- Manage
social media specialists to grow audience
- Provide
leadership to ensure the highest standards of professional ethics
- Represent
the Butler Eagle in the community and be a diplomat for community
journalism
- Facilitate
or guide philanthropic projects undertaken by the newsroom
Skills and Educational requirements:
- B.A.
in Journalism, English or related field
- Ability
and willingness to produce a tightly edited publication
- 10 to
12 years writing and editing or equivalent experience
- Experience
with search engine optimization
- Proficiency
in AP style practices
- Basic
knowledge of media law, including how to avoid libel
- Highly
organized, detail oriented and capable of managing multiple projects and
people
- Strong
communication skills and the ability to interact effectively within and
outside of the organization
- Ability
to identify and solve simple and complex problems through effective
evaluation and implementation skills
- Ability
to supervise reporters, editors, photographers and freelancers
effectively to promote personal growth, team camaraderie, and a
culture of service to each other and the community
We are seeking an experienced, digitally savvy managing
editor with a strong track record working in a daily or weekly newspaper
environment. Experience with a business-to-business niche product is a plus.
You must be proven leader with strong journalism skills and excellent
management and production development skills.
