Description:
Freelance Reporter Openings – Cowboy State Daily
Location: Remote (Wyoming-based preferred)
Job Status: Freelance/Contract
Cowboy State Daily, Wyoming’s largest and fastest-growing news outlet, is looking for experienced and versatile freelance journalists to join our expanding team.
As an independent, nonpartisan digital news publication focused on Wyoming, we look to cover the most important and interesting stories across the state and mountain west region, delivering a variety of stories to our readers every day that they find informative and useful.
About the Role
We are seeking resourceful, creative reporters capable of pitching smart, original news and features.
Candidates should be self-starters, eager to generate their own stories.
We want writers who can find local angles of broad, statewide interest or are skilled at regionalizing national or regional news or trends, making them relatable to Wyomingites.
You’ll work closely with our editors to produce content for our online news site but also be called upon frequently to do quick broadcast spots and interviews to talk about your stories on our daily video newscasts, roundups and Cowboy State Daily Morning Show.
These roles are for frequent contributors. We would love for you to become a regular, trusted member of our newsgathering operation.
Key Responsibilities
• Report and write stories across a variety of subject areas for a Wyoming audience.
• Find novel story ideas and develop unique angles to trends and breaking news.
• Cultivate trusted relationships with sources throughout Wyoming.
• Communicate effectively with editors and colleagues to shape story development.
• Gather photo, video or handout art to help illustrate stories.
Requirements
• A minimum of three years of professional journalism experience.
• Strong news judgment, clear writing style and commitment to accuracy.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Familiarity with digital storytelling and social media best practices.
• Must have reliable internet, a valid driver’s license and access to transportation. Some story ideas may require travel within the state and region.
Compensation
Competitive per-piece rates, based on experience, the complexity of assignments and timeliness of turnarounds. Compensation takes into account skill set, experience, unique qualifications and evolving coverage needs.
To Apply
Qualified candidates should email a resume, a short cover letter outlining your interest in covering Wyoming, and 3-5 links or PDFs of your strongest published clips to: News@CowboyStateDaily.com.
