Description:
The Union Democrat, an award-winning daily newspaper in California's scenic Sierra Nevada foothills, is seeking an energetic sports reporter to own the local sports beat in Tuolumne County with an emphasis on prep sports at local high schools and junior college basketball and volleyball at Columbia College.
This individual must have a strong understanding of sports and be enthusiastic about highlighting the athletic achievements of local youth. Their writing should be accurate, clear, informative and engaging for our readers. They would develop and maintain strong contacts in the community to help with the news gathering process — community outreach is a must — and keep track of the various teams’ schedules to ensure all major games and events are covered.
Photography and social media use are requirements for this position. The reporter would be expected to take their own photos for all stories. Experience with Adobe InDesign would make a candidate stand out.
The reporter would also be asked to produce features such as player profiles and season previews, as well as occasionally being assigned to take photos at community events and write breaking news stories or non-sports features. In return, you'll be part of a dedicated staff and live in a beautiful region — with Yosemite next door.
