BRIEF DESCRIPTION

 Key responsibilities include planning and monitoring of organizational budget, management of personnel, and efficient operation of the newspaper.  In addition, this position is expected to be deeply involved in the community.  A unique aspect of this position requires the ability to fill in for any of the other positions in the organization as needed.  This position is responsible for the general operational and fiscal management of the Kodiak Daily Mirror.  The Kodiak Daily Mirror is a non-profit independent newspaper.   The Kodiak Daily Mirror has a sister newspaper relationship with the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.

 

DUTIES  

1.  Prepare and monitor yearly organizational budget including regular monitoring of expenses and revenues.

2.  Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating personnel.

3.  Coordinate activities between departments.

4.  Review operations and enforce regulations including company policy.

5.  Establish effective and efficient work procedures.

6.  Fill in for other positions in the organization when needed.

7.  Monitor content of newspaper.

8.  Regular involvement in community.

9.  Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

    Minimum

            1.  High School Diploma or GED and five years experience working in the newspaper     industry in a supervisory capacity.

    Preferred

            1.  Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Journalism or related field plus two years experience   working in the newspaper industry in a supervisory capacity.

            2.  Specific training in newspaper reporting, editing, sales or marketing.

 

Experience and Skill

1.  Minimum of five years experience working in the newspaper industry.

2.  Experience with pagination and computer systems.

3.  Prefer previous experience in Newspaper sales, circulation and/or editing.

4.  Previous experience developing and maintaining a budget.

5.  Previous experience hiring, training and evaluating staff.

6.  Ability to work independently.

7.  Ability to make regular business decisions.

8.  Sales background preferred
