The Fresno Bee is seeking an Opinion editor/writer to provide urgent and local editorials as a part of McClatchy’s talented California opinion team.

We want a digital first journalist who provides local and state commentary that effects change, breaks news and elevates diverse voices in our communities. Success in this position requires being at the center of those communities as a writer, editor and leader of relevant discussions of local and statewide issues. The next editor will include a wide range of diverse political views in our opinion content with the aim of  leading a civil community conversation about local public policy issues.

The opinion editor will write columns and reported editorials representing The Bee’s views on Fresno and the Central Valley region. The opinion editor will continually work to find ways to engage our audiences.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $80,000 and $110,000 a year. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, department equity and relevant education.

*Have at least five years of journalism experience.

*Embrace our digital-first approach.

*Have strong editing skills and news judgment.

Fresno is the breadbasket of California, and its critical agricultural industry helps feed the world. Fresno is the gateway to Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Fresno politics have helped shape national politics; the slim GOP majority in the House of Representatives was secured when Democratic seats in the Fresno coverage area flipped from blue to red. A primary goal of our editor will be to analyze and explain the politics of the Fresno Valley to readers in Fresno and throughout California. The goal of the editor when covering Fresno will be to frame local content through a statewide lens so that the issues and people resonate with local and statewide readers.

The editor will report to California Opinion Editor Marcos Breton and will meet weekly with  McClatchy’s California team. During election season, the writer will write endorsement editorials for political races for the Fresno Bee and nearby Merced Sun-Star and could also write editorials for the California team on statewide races that will be published in all of our California markets.
