The Paper. was founded in the middle of the pandemic by many of the former staff of the former Weekly Alibi. Through COVID, it grew quickly to become the city’s free digital news source for stories of perseverance and recovery. Post-pandemic, The Paper. expanded weekly print and digital distribution as our city’s arts, culture and events returned.

Today, The Paper. enjoys the city’s highest email readership (over 50,000 subscribers strong) and an audited weekly print circulation of over 20,000.

Our current editor is staying with our team in an expanded leadership role (more on that later). We are looking for the next great editor of the city’s beloved alt-weekly. Is that you?

Job Title: Editor for The Paper., Albuquerque’s Alt-Weekly Publication

Location: Albuquerque, NM. Work is in our office in downtown Albuquerque.

Company Overview: The Paper. is Albuquerque’s only alt-weekly publication, dedicated to delivering diverse perspectives on news, culture, arts and local happenings. Our mission is to provide readers with insightful, in-depth reporting and compelling stories that reflect the unique character of our community. We publish both online at and in print weekly, offering a vibrant platform for independent journalism.

Job Summary: We are seeking a dynamic and experienced editor to lead and manage The Paper. The ideal candidate will have a passion for alternative journalism, a deep understanding of Albuquerque’s cultural and social landscape and the ability to drive high-quality content across digital and print platforms. As editor, you will oversee the editorial team of issue-based freelancers and a shared staff of news and local content journalists, ensure journalistic integrity and play a pivotal role in shaping the voice and direction of our publication.

On a weekly basis, the editor of The Paper. is the coach for a small team of journalists, freelancers and content creators working to tell ABQ’s unique stories. Editors usually do not create most of our content (though some original reporting may be required for special news or featured stories). Instead, they serve as the coach to move people forward to create the city’s most beloved and most-read arts, culture and events publication. 

The editor of The Paper. is a critical member of our editorial team at Ctrl+P Publishing – the state’s second largest publishing company, publishing City Desk ABQThe Paper., the Sandoval Signpost, the Corrales Comment and the Independent News.  We use a shared newsroom to cover news and events across the four-county-local metro area. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Editorial Leadership: Develop and execute the editorial strategy for both the online and print editions. Ensure a consistent, engaging, and unique editorial voice that resonates with our audience. Work with the publisher and editors from our other publications to create and execute an annual editorial calendar centered around unique local events (Pride, Local events, Elections etc.) and featuring special content.
  • Content Management: Oversee the planning, assignment, and editing of articles, features, and multimedia content. Ensure content is accurate, well-researched, and aligns with the publication’s standards and mission. Ensure content meets our internal style guidelines (AP Style) and is published free of errors. 
  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and manage a diverse team of writers, editors, photographers, and freelancers. Foster a collaborative and creative environment that encourages innovative storytelling. Serve as a coach for new journalists, including student journalists embedded in our newsroom(s) through partnerships with local universities.

    As an editor, you are supported by our art director, sales team and digital manager who all ensure the back-end publishing is handled on deadline each week. While our editors are not responsible for layout, web design or sales, you will work closely with each team to meet your deadlines.
  • Publication Oversight: Coordinate with design and production teams to ensure timely and quality delivery of the weekly print edition. Manage the editorial calendar and deadlines for both print and digital content.
  • Community Engagement: Act as a representative of The Paper in the community. Build and maintain relationships with local organizations, contributors, and readers. Attend events and participate in community activities to stay informed and connected.
  • Digital Strategy: Work with our digital team to design content that is engaging in digital as well as print (adding video content to online stories, shareable and reader-generated content). Monitor web traffic and engagement metrics to inform editorial decisions.
  • Editorial Standards: Uphold ethical journalism standards and practices. Ensure that all content meets legal and professional guidelines, including fact-checking and sensitivity to diverse perspectives.
  • Budget Management: Oversee the editorial budget, including payments for contributors and other expenses related to content creation.


  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of reporting and/or editing experience in a local newsroom or in a similar role responsible for identifying, creating and publishing unique local stories, preferably in an alt-weekly or similar publication. Applicants without prior experience as an editor must be able to demonstrate self-directed reporting and/or increasingly responsible reporting leading to leadership of a team to accomplish editorial goals or multi-faceted projects on a deadline.
  • Skills: A strong “coaching” mentality. Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills. Proficient in content management systems (CMS) and familiarity with digital media tools and analytics.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of Albuquerque’s cultural, social, and political landscape. Keen interest in alternative media and independent journalism.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead and inspire a team, manage multiple projects, and adapt to a fast-paced environment.
