About New York Focus

New York Focus is an independent newsroom investigating New York state politics, with a focus on how decisions are made in Albany and how they impact ordinary New Yorkers. We are New York's only statewide nonprofit newsroom, and we're filling a critical gap as local news across the state has been cut to the bone and major news organizations pivot to serve international audiences, leaving local readers stranded.

Since we launched in October 2020, our stories have spurred legislation, shaped regulation, and driven national news cycles. Our reporting exposes how power works and casts light on little-known but highly consequential figures, institutions, and systems that shape policy and its implementation. Read more about us in this New York Times profile.

We're a fast-growing team: We doubled in size over the last year, and will expand further throughout 2024 and 2025. We're looking for an experienced, driven editor to work closely with reporters and other editors to produce journalism that shakes up Albany’s chummy and complacent political culture, and sheds light on corruption, waste, and the power of special interest groups.

The Role

The managing editor works with the editor-in-chief to deliver on New York Focus’s mission of producing investigative and accountability journalism that exposes how power works in our state. This is a job with considerable leverage to shape the voice, culture, and journalistic instincts of a growing newsroom that is fast becoming New York’s premier source of in-depth political coverage.

You will run the day-to-day operations of the newsroom, overseeing a team of about a dozen journalists. With the support of other editors, you’ll plan our editorial calendar; help set coverage priorities; and ensure our stories are reported, edited, and produced to the highest standards. And you'll be the primary editor for a team of four to five reporters, workshopping ideas, strategizing throughout the reporting process, and conducting detailed edits of drafts.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Superb editing abilities, on both meaty investigations and quick-turn political scoops

  • The people skills to manage a team, helping journalists with a wide variety of experience levels do the best work of their careers

  • A deep investment and intellectual interest in state politics and policy, and the drive and vision to help build an institution into its next chapter

  • At least five years experience in journalism

We are committed to an inclusive workspace, and especially encourage applications from people of color, women, LGBTQ+ people, and people with disabilities.
