We’re looking for a creative, thoughtful editor to help lead a team of enterprise reporters focused on key Bay Area beats – from science and the environment to education and transportation. As an assignment editor on our Focus team, we want you to lean into the most important stories of the day and also lead the step-backs on the stories that will make an impact on our communities. The Focus team uses data to enrich the narrative and metrics to help inform its choices. Join us in reimaging what’s possible in a quickly changing news environment. Help us inform the readers of our two daily newspapers – The Mercury News and the East Bay Times – and a website that reaches the world.

Must be located in the South or East Bay Area and work at least three office days weekly in San Jose..

What you will do:

  • Manage journalists with a wide range of experience and talent to produce quick hits for our websites, centerpiece stories for the front page and expansive pieces that delight readers with beautiful writing

  • Provide strong, thoughtful editing, often on deadline, for a sophisticated print audience that appreciates excellent reporting, balanced perspectives and a regional focus.

  • Collaborate with other news leaders across the newsroom and provide leadership across departments in pursuit of excellence.

  • Use metrics to inform coverage and guide reporters and editors.

What you will bring:

  • 3+ years of experience as an editor

  • Excellent news judgment and a drive to compete under deadline pressure

  • Strong organizational and planning skills

  • A university degree in journalism or a related field

  • In our diverse region, facility with a second language is a plus
