Description:

Southeast Missourian seeks talented journalist for health reporting lab

The Southeast Missourian has raised more than $125,000 in a new healthcare fund for healthcare reporting and community organization and is looking for a healthcare journalist who wants to be instrumental in writing about healthcare and the social determinants of health.

Position is based in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, a charming, family-friendly college town with a vibrant arts community located between St. Louis and Memphis on the Mississippi River. More than a third of the immediate area’s GDP is affiliated with a booming healthcare economy. But reporter will also be digging deep into issues from throughout the “Bootheel” of Southeast Missouri, which is one of the poorest areas of the country.

The Southeast Missourian is the flagship of Rust Communications, a highly innovative media company that encompasses newspapers, radio, magazines, a digital media agency, event marketing, real estate development and a new AI-integrated digital CMS being marketed to other media companies: pubgen.ai.

Qualifications

  • A focus on producing accurate, well-written and factual stories
  • Entrepreneurial, creative thinking
  • A collaborative spirit open to group planning around reporting priorities
  • Interest in starting something new and powerful to help others
  • Comfort and excitement in hosting public panels, as well as being interviewed on video
  • A major plus: Prior experience in health reporting as a freelancer or full-time reporter

If hired for this position, reporter will be sponsored to become member of Association of Healthcare Journalists (or equivalent organization) with opportunities for training, professional mentorship and conferences.

Compensation: $38,000 to $50,000 annually, commensurate on experience and demonstrated skills.

The Southeast Missourian and Rust Communications is an equal employment opportunity employer. We encourage applicants of all backgrounds and experience to apply.

Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability, PTO, 401K and other.
