Description:

Associate Editor

University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a Associate Editor.

Applications will be accepted until 05/27/2024.

Notre Dame Magazine, a quarterly print publication with a circulation of more than 150,000 University alumni and friends worldwide, seeks an experienced and versatile journalist to join our staff. The magazine also publishes regularly online at magazine.nd.edu, including web-only articles, podcasts and other multimedia content, and maintains a robust social media presence. This Associate Editor, one of two on a staff of six — four editors, an art director and a business manager — plays an integral role in every aspect of the magazine's work. In addition to reporting on the institution, student life, academic initiatives, and alumni around the world, Notre Dame Magazine covers a wide range of issues, including current events, science and technology, business, arts and culture, family and community, and religion. Encompassing the moral, spiritual and ethical dimensions of these subjects, the magazine reflects the University's mission and explores matters of global consequence, reminiscent of the classroom and residence hall discussions that enliven campus life.

The Associate Editor will contribute to the planning, execution and production of the magazine's flagship quarterly print edition. That includes primary responsibility for a four-page alumni news section, as well as writing longform features and shorter pieces, copy editing and fact-checking, contributing story ideas, assigning articles to freelancers, and collaborating on photo, illustration and design decisions. In addition, the successful candidate will lead the editing and development of the publication's web, social and multimedia presence — conceiving, assigning, writing and editing web-only stories, as well as overseeing social-media posting, podcasting production and new digital initiatives — while maintaining the print magazine's quality and character across platforms.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 3 years of experience in journalism
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects with varied deadlines
  • Proven track record in reporting and writing longform articles
  • Attention to detail in reporting and editing to ensure fairness and accuracy
  • Strong interpersonal skills to contribute in a collaborative working environment, and to represent the magazine with sources, freelancers and readers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with storytelling across multiple forms of media
  • Aptitude with audio and video editing tools
