Description:

Come join the news staff of an award-winning, well-established media organization in a vibrant college town just outside of Kansas City.

The Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World has an immediate opening for a full-time reporter who will do a mix of beat reporting and general assignment reporting. The most likely beat we will ask you to cover will be city government, although all of our positions are given opportunities to produce features and enterprise work.

The Lawrence Journal-World is a six-day per week newspaper that operates the region’s most comprehensive news website, LJWorld.com. The Lawrence metro area — home to approximately 125,000 people about 30 minutes outside of Kansas City — has been a consistently growing region for decades.

We are seeking candidates who are curious, understand the importance of accuracy and timeliness, have demonstrated writing skills, are committed to ethical journalism and appreciate the importance of local news in a community.

We are open to candidates of varying experience levels. Recent journalism graduates who have a strong portfolio of professional work may apply. However, the beat would be well served by a journalist who has acquired professional experience in covering local governments. The position’s compensation range is $35,000 to $40,000, depending on experience.

At the Journal-World, you will join a newsroom of approximately 10 full-time, dedicated journalists, including a team of locally based copy editors and designers who produce award-winning print and digital products.

Journalists here also are fortunate to work in a community that values local journalism. The Journal-World is well supported by subscribers, including a growing base of digital subscribers.

Lawrence is a vibrant, young community. We are home to the University of Kansas, have an attractive downtown entertainment district, many outdoor recreational opportunities, and are a short drive from many of Kansas City’s most popular destinations.

Applicants should send a letter of interest, a resumé and at least three writing samples to Managing Editor Kim Callahan at kcallahan@ljworld.com. Application review will begin immediately.

When applying, mention you saw this opening listed at JournalismJobs.com.
