Description:
Gillette News Record is looking for its next sports editor.
This position comes with a level of creative and editorial control over local sports coverage for this twice-weekly in print, daily online publication.
And this northeastern Wyoming town of more than 30,000 people loves its sports.
The ideal candidate will primarily cover two prep high schools and a junior college in Gillette, along with other sports teams such as junior hockey and American Legion baseball.
Gillette hosts numerous sporting events each year, from youth basketball and soccer tournaments to rodeos and horse racing.
Gillette’s two high schools compete at the highest classification in the state of Wyoming (Class 4A), and it hosts a handful of regional and state tournaments. This past school year, Gillette hosted the state tournaments for indoor track, soccer and tennis, and local teams won state championships in wrestling, indoor track and golf.
Gillette College competes at the Division I level of the NJCAA. The college features men’s and women’s basketball teams, men’s and women’s soccer teams, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s rodeo teams.
The gamers and week-to-week beat coverage are essential, but not at the expense of depth and storytelling. The editorial team of the News Record encourages and fosters feature and enterprise writing, with countless stories to tell within the local sports community.
This job allows you to immerse in your beats, but also in your community. Gillette is a proud town with a storied history of local sports. Once a boom town, Gillette has a rich history reported by the News Record for more than 100 years.
Gillette is less than an hour from Devils Tower and about two hours from both the Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills National Forest. The community features excellent public amenities, including a modern recreation center with two pools and a climbing wall, walking and biking trails and several parks.
Experience with page design and photography skills are a plus. Hours vary but will require working weekends and some holidays.
