Description:

The Santa Fe New Mexican, a locally owned and independent newspaper in one of the nation’s most interesting capital cities, is searching for an education reporter who won’t just cover the local school board but also will examine pressing issues from pre-K to higher ed in a state that consistently ranks at the bottom when it comes to educational measures.

The successful candidate for this fast-paced position will cover education from the classroom level to the state and federal government agencies and lawmakers whose decisions affect our community’s kids and families.

Working in a newsroom surrounded by busy, productive colleagues who care about good journalism, you’ll juggle a mix of daily news, features and thoughtful, in-depth enterprise pieces for our weekend editions.

Don’t be fooled by Santa Fe’s small size. It’s a culturally rich and busy news town with a diverse population, and it’s surrounded by mountain ranges offering opportunities for stellar year-round outdoor recreation.

Solid reporting and writing skills are a must. We’re looking for insightful self-starters who always have a sharp idea, most often focused on powerful human stories.

Job requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree and experience at a daily newspaper. New grads welcome to apply.

• Strong writing and reporting skills with an eye on deadline and the willingness to tell stories in non-traditional ways.

• Drive and ingenuity. Our readers demand news about their community, region and state, and our job is to provide it every day. Their expectations are high, and so are ours.

Salary is negotiable, depending on experience and demonstrated ability. Send your cover letter, résumé and clips of your best work to: Cynthia Miller, News Content Editor, Santa Fe New Mexican, cmiller@sfnewmexican.com. No calls, please.

The New Mexican offers a comprehensive and competitive compensation package and is an equal opportunity employer.
